But the war finished before Mitchell's inventive plans could be tested. (Patrick K. O’Donnell, America’s first class troops in World War II-the Airborne) After the war, the idea of vertical envelopment was disregarded in the United States. The Soviet Union, then again, pushed ahead with huge scope airborne activities during the 1930s. Germany paid heed to the Soviet activities and started fabricating its own airborne program, comprised of paratroopers and infantry that would ride in lightweight flyers. The Fallschirmjager, the German paratroopers of World War 2, made the principal airborne infantry attacks ever. At the point when Germany attacked Western Europe in 1940, the German paratroopers parachuted and arrived with lightweight planes and caught vital positions. After a year, in May 1941, in their most noteworthy activity, they attacked and vanquished the huge island Crete in the Mediterranean exclusively via airborne soldiers. Their misfortunes were with the end goal that Hitler concluded never to do another enormous airborne activity, so the German paratroopers served the remainder of the war as tip top infantry. Male Dominance and Female Influence on Disneys The Lion King Movie Review

Male Dominance and Female Influence on Disneys The Lion King - Movie Review Example The impact that the organization has increased during that time can be seen all over. It has diverged to pretty much every sort of media and fanned out to promoting as a rewarding undertaking. One, among the numerous movies created by Walt Disney Pictures, is The Lion King. This enlivened film, discharged in 1994, has charmed youngsters who saw the undertakings of Simba and his trip of finding himself so as to recover the beneficiary to the realm which was legitimately his. The film has launch spin-offs including enlivened arrangement highlighting a portion of its most charming characters. It had really won various honors. Something that was remarkable at the ideal opportunity for enlivened movies. It made ready for the acknowledgment of activity as a checked type of filmmaking. It won Best Film under the class of Musical or Comedy at the 1994 Golden Globe Awards where it likewise when Best Score, a classification it additionally packed away in the Academy Awards that equivalent year . The hover of life, this is the most popular melody usually credited to the Lion King. This is the thing that the film is attempting to grant with its crowd. The worth and the truth that we are totally associated. â€Å"Everything you see exists together, in a sensitive equalization. You have to comprehend that parity and regard all the animals - from the creeping insect to the jumping antelope† (Mufasa, The Lion King). The lions eat the pronghorns, as Mufasa had told Simba, however beyond words and when they pass on, they fill in as food to the grass that impalas at that point eat. Life is a cycle and a lion might be at the highest point of the natural way of life today yet he will likewise turn into an alternate piece of it the following. Yet, what The Lion King additionally lets us know is that life is likewise a triangle. The strength of the male over female characters can be found all through the film yet there are likewise some that recommend the impact of ladies on th e male’s dynamic. It is a pyramid wherein the pride has a framework wherein the alpha lion is the leader of the chain of importance. It is a lot of a man centric culture wherein the alpha male and the male figure dominate every other person. The pioneer of the clan should basically be a male. This is the reason the introduction of Simba was an occasion. He is the image and the acknowledgment that the multiplication of their family as the leader of the realm will proceed. Indeed, even the backwoods has a progression. Furthermore, this administration is dictated by life. Quality may just be a characteristic credited to a male lion. There is nothing of the sort as a lion sovereign. The negligible thought is downright foolish. The way toward picking who the alpha male ought to be is controlled by his quality. This is Scar’s disdain. He was subjected to the seat to Mufasa in view of the scar all over. This implies he was not picked as lord since he had lost a battle. The ta steful imprint is a steady token of his shortcoming. In spite of the fact that he got the ‘lion’s share’ in the mind as to brains and shrewd, his sibling got the sheer beast power (Scar, The Lion King). This is clearly more significant than all else. The minor thunder of Mufasa and his air was respected with dread and incredible regard among his kin. The very notice of the name of Mufasa sends chills to the hyenas. He administered splendidly and had the option to train Simba without utilizing an iron clench hand. He kept up the harmony in the realm by holding fast to the framework restricted by limits that must not be crossed.

In Memoriam Professor Silbey

In Memoriam Professor Silbey Last Thursday, Bob Silbey, a professor in Course 5 (Chemistry) and former MIT Dean of the School of Science, passed away after battling cancer. My interaction with Prof. Silbey was in Spring 2010, when I took 20.111 (Thermodynamics of Biomolecular Systems), so we werent exactly best buddies. In fact, I think the one time we actually had vocal interaction was when I finally worked up the nerves to ask a question in his class, only to confirm that there is such a thing as a stupid question (the answer was right there on the lecture handout). That being said, he was and is one of my favorite professors Ive had at MIT. He managed to take something that I found inherently boring and not only make hourly lectures of it bearable, but interesting, dare I say fun The man was such a great lecturer that he was one of two people ON THIS PLANET (or at least, in my book) that could get away with using Comic Sans (the other being Prof. Bawendi, who co-taught the class). One of my favorite memories of Prof. Silbey happened during his lecture on Valentines day one of the a cappella groups on campus delivers singing-grams on Valentines day, and as a member of the Logs ran into our lecture hall in the middle of class screaming, We come delivering a message of love!, Prof. Silbey let out a huge, surprised yawp before proceeding to lay on the desk in front of the blackboard to comfortably enjoy the Logs as they serenaded a girl in the class. Now I realize my view may be a little biased, but I did a little researching and found out that Im not the only person who admired Bob Silbey and recognized that he was a great guy. Not only was he a fellow of the National Academy of Sciences and regarded as one of the leaders in theroretical physical chemistry, he also won just about every teaching award that MIT gives (including the Baker Award for Undergraduate Teaching, the nomination and selection of which is determined entirely by undergrads). At any school, teaching is a difficult profession. Youll get people who teach well but whose research doesnt live up to their lectures. Or much worse, youll get people who have pioneered a field, have won a Nobel, and may literally be the smartest person on earth, but cant speak coherently for 50 minutes. Professor Silbey was not any of these people. Any time I feel inclined to gripe about the amount of work I have to do, I remember the opportunities Ive had to learn from people like him at MIT.  I consider myself very lucky to be in the company of the  Bob Silbeys here. He wasnt my mentor, adviser, friend or relative, though it seems as though he was a great one to many other people. To me, he was simply a great teacher, in every sense of the word. He was also extremely dedicated he did things like work on a study of the status of women faculty in science at MIT in the early 90s, which was one of the first to bring up the gender discrimination in academia. He was a department head, a dean, and on top of that, Id often see him in the audience at our MITSO concerts. Professor Silbey, I didnt know you well, but in the semester that you taught one of my classes, I learned this much you loved your job and you loved sharing your love of science with your students. I learned a lot about thermodynamics, too. (And not only that the second law is hard to teach, as you said, but also kind of hard to understand) At that time, I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life but I at least knew that I wanted to be doing something someday with the same amount of joy that you had in teaching us. Perhaps I this is a grossly-simplified view of you, perhaps I have no grasp on any of the politics you dealt with (or how you really felt about) being a professor, researcher or dean. But I knew you well enough to be thankful to have had a teacher like you that made me excited to be at MIT, to learn. For that, I am eternally grateful.

Irregular Plural Nouns Definitions and Examples

In English grammar, an irregular plural is a  noun that does not form its plural simply by adding the suffix -s or -es to the base. Although most count nouns in English have regular plurals, some nouns (such as sheep) dont have separate plural forms while others (such as woman and half) form the plural by changing an internal vowel (women) or consonant (halves). Examples and Observations All around us on each side of the river were sheep, cattle, horses, wagons, men, women and children—more cattle and sheep than I ever saw before in my life: drove after drove, thousands, yes, tens of thousands.(Rebecca Ketcham, quoted by Lillian Schlissel in Womens Diaries of the Westward Journey. Schocken Books, 1992)Farmers trekked into town with their children and wives streaming around them. (Maya Angelou, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings. Random House, 1969)There was a discipline and purpose about the wolves, almost like divisions of an army preparing for battle. (John Connolly, The Book of Lost Things. Atria, 2006)It is incredibly easy to update tests, quizzes, syllabi, handouts, and parent letters with simple cut and paste strategies. (Mary C. Clement,First. Scarecrow, 2005) Time in the High School ClassroomStudents hear several series of familiar patterns in various combinations and recognize the tonality (major or minor) of each series. (Eric Bluestine, The Ways Childr en Learn Music. GIA, 2000)Parentheses come in pairs. (Bill Walsh, Yes, I Could Care Less: How to Be a Language Snob Without Being a Jerk. St. Martins Press, 2013)[O]ne can see engravings, paintings, and carvings in the soft surface of the rock. Most of the figures represented are deer and bison, primary food sources for the caves inhabitants. (Trudy Ring et al., International Dictionary of Historic Places: Southern Europe. Fitzroy Dearborn, 1995)I have hired a programmer to set up a customized version of Access, specifically to cross-index my patients, including the usual demographic data, diagnoses, medications, referrals, and procedures. (Phil R. Manning and Lois DeBakey,  Ã¢â‚¬â€¹Medicine: Preserving the Passion in the 21st Century, 2nd ed. Springer, 2004)If the plural of loaf is loaves, whats the plural of oaf? she says. Why isnt it oaves? George realizes that a good deal of what she says is directed not to him or to any other listener but simply to herself. (Margaret Atwood, Wilderness Tips. Doubleday, 1991) Nouns With Two Plural Forms Irregular plural nouns are generally nouns that follow older patterns of English or are nouns that have been borrowed from Latin or Greek and thus take the Latin or Greek plural formation. In the case of words that have been borrowed from Latin or Greek, there is a tendency for them to adopt over time the regular English plural -s inflection. Therefore, we see words such as syllabus that actually have two plural forms, the original syllabi and the English syllabuses. (Andrea DeCapua, Grammar for Teachers. Springer, 2008) Irregular Nouns With New Meanings When a word with an irregular plural is given a new meaning, it often takes a regular plural. So, although leaves is the usual plural of leaf, the Toronto hockey team is called the Maple Leafs, a tea in Taiwan is called Leafs and a Swedish band is called Fallen Leafs. The normal regular plural for mouse must be mice, yet computer mice gives a strange image of little creatures dashing about the mouse-pad rather than the new regular plural, computer mouses; nevertheless, Dell computers use mice on their website. . . . Interestingly, the same regularization effect applies to the pronunciation of irregular spellings: salmon is said without an l but salmonella clearly has one. (Vivian Cook, All in a Word. Melville House, 2010) Top 10 Mistakes Using Nouns With Irregular Plurals The following list shows the ten nouns with irregular plural forms that cause the most difficulty for advanced learners of English. The words on the left show the singular form of the noun and the words on the right show the correct plural form: 1. life - lives 2. child - children 3. belief - beliefs 4. country - countries 5. company - companies 6. hero - heroes 7. wife - wives 8. city - cities 9. sheep - sheep 10. activity - activities Note that in [most dictionaries] an entry for a noun with an irregular plural form will show the plural form at the start of the entry. (Cambridge Advanced Learners Dictionary, 3rd ed. Cambridge University Press, 2008) The Lighter Side of Irregular Plurals This is a man who thinks the plural of goose is sheep.(Lois Griffin speaking about Peter Griffin in Running Mates. Family Guy, 2000)My boy, said the school inspector, whats the plural of mouse?Mice, said Jimmie.Right, said the inspector. And now, what is the plural of baby?Twins! said Jimmie.(Personal Efficiency, Vol. 13, 1923)

Hamlet and Horatio Best Friends for Life an Analysis of Hamlet Free Essays

3 November 2009 Hamlet and Horatio Best Friends for Life: an Analysis of Hamlet In Hamlet, two characters I believe to be important are Hamlet and his friend, Horatio. Horatio is the second most important character in the play. Horatio is Hamlet’s best friend and advisor. We will write a custom essay sample on Hamlet and Horatio Best Friends for Life: an Analysis of Hamlet or any similar topic only for you Order Now Horatio never keeps anything from Hamlet. In Act one, scene one; Horatio, Bernardo, and Marcellus see the ghost of king Hamlet who was killed by his brother, Claudius. After the ghost disappears, Horatio tells Marcellus and Bernardo to reveal to Hamlet what they have seen. †¦Let us impart what we have seen tonight Unto young Hamlet; for upon my life, This spirit, dumb to us, will speak to him†¦. † (Act 1, Scene 1). Hamlet reveals to Horatio what the spirit reveled to him about Claudius. â€Å"†¦But know, thou noble youth, The serpent that did sting thy father’s life Now wears his crown. † (Act 1, scene 5). Horatio tells no one, of what Hamlet has told him, and he plays along with Hamlet’s idea of pretending to be mad or insane. I believe this exhibits that Hamlet trusts Horatio more than the other characters. I believe that Hamlet can go to Horatio for anything. †¦There is a play tonight before the king. One scene of it comes near the c ircumstance Which I have told thee of my father’s death. I prithee, when thou seest that act afoot, Even with the very comment of thy soul Observe my uncle†¦. † (Act 3, Scene 2). I believe that Horatio is able to understand Hamlet better than the other characters do. In Act five, scene two, Hamlet tells Horatio to tell his story to everyone. The only reason that Hamlet would tell Horatio this; is if he was the only one left that could tell his story, and because Horatio is his friend. Let us face it, if we were on our deathbed, would we not want our best friend to tell our story? In Act one, scene two, we get a glimpse of Hamlet’s resentment over his mother’s marriage, to his uncle, which follow hard upon the funeral of his father. â€Å"†¦Within a month, Ere yet the sale of most unrighteous tears Had left the flushing in her galled eyes She married. O most wicked speed, to post With such dexterity to incestuous sheets! It is not, nor it cannot come to good. But break, my heart, for I must hold my tongue. † ( Act 1, Scene 2). In Act two, Scene one, we see a hint of Hamlet’s love for Ophelia. In Act two, scene two, Hamlet doubts the spirit of his father, and thinks that his father could be telling the truth or telling a lie. He is not quite sure which is truth and which is false. We see that Hamlet has many questions as to what he could do to see if the ghost is telling the truth. He decides to put on a play with a scene that he has added. In Act three, scene one, we get a peek of how he seems to know everything. â€Å"Let the doors be shut upon him [Polonius], that he may play the fool nowhere but in’s own house. Farewell. † In this Act, he says things to Ophelia that I believe he does not mean, such as, â€Å"Get thee to a nunnery. ’’ I believe he is saying what he says for the benefit of Polonius, Ophelia’s father. Polonius believes that Hamlet is mad, or insane. â€Å"Your noble son is mad. † Hamlet is abhorrent toward Claudius because Claudius killed his father. In act three, scene four we see Hamlet’s reluctance to kill his uncle, but this time he is unwilling to kill Claudius because he is praying or that is what it seems like to Hamlet. Let us face it, who in their right mind would kill someone while they are praying? However, I believe that Hamlet should have killed Claudius in this scene because if he did then the other characters that die would not have died and his father’s spirit would be able to rest in peace. At the end of Act three, Hamlet kills Polonius believing him to be Claudius. â€Å"I took thee for thy better. † It was so easy for Hamlet to kill Polonius because he believed him to be Claudius. Hamlet then hides the body because he does not want anyone to know what he has done, or maybe he hides the body ecause he wants people to believe that he is insane. At the end of the play, Hamlet forces Claudius to drink from a cup of poison thus killing him. Horatio knowing that Hamlet was dying decides to drink from the cup so he would not be alone, but Hamlet stops him. Hamlet then tells Horatio to tell his story to the world. Hamlet also dies from the same poison. Throughout the play, Hamlet ha s been at war with Claudius because Claudius killed his father and then married his mother. At the same time, he is at a constant battle with his feelings. He asks questions that are difficult to answer or even understand, but he always comes up with an answer. Horatio’s part in the play is the second important part. Without Horatio, I believe that Hamlet would have killed himself, because he would not have any one to share his burden of killing his uncle. Horatio keeps helping Hamlet every chance he gets. Horatio also tries to take poison because Hamlet is dying; if this is not true friendship then I do not know what is. Fire Engineering Essay Example

Fire Engineering Essay Example Fire Engineering Essay Fire Engineering Essay Essay Topic: To Build a Fire Fire Engineering Name: Institution: Lecturer: : Course: Date: Fire Engineering 1. What do laws in your state indicate about false fire alarms and tampering with fire protection equipment? Cite the law. If anyone purposely breaks, molests or tampers with any private or public fire equipment, they will be considered guilty; for instance, tampering with fire alarms, fire extinguishers, emergency radios or phones. This includes attracting false attention to suggest fire accident. For example, shouting for help, sounding fire alarms or any other way of communication suggesting fire. However, this law does not prohibit testing of fire safety equipment like alarms. It should be strictly noted that only authorized persons are allowed to do those tests. The penalty for this offense is stated in Fire Safety Act 1988. A culprit will be guilty of a misdemeanor. He or she will be penalized according to the ruling of the court. In most cases, one is fined an amount not more than $1,000. Everyone is required to protect fire safety equipment and use only when necessary (National Fire Protection Association., Society of Fire Protection Engineers, 1988). 2. A factory has ceased to make metal parts for machines and is now being used to store plastic garbage cans (the type used outside). It is a sprinklered building. Is this acceptable? Why or why not? Cite the code. It is not acceptable to drastically change the function of a sprinklered building. The factory was previously dealing with metal, and now it is a store for plastic bags. The management is supposed to comply with requirements of having a plastic bags store. This includes installing the right equipment and fire safety equipment. There are also requirements for a sprinkler building. The management is required to adhere to them. This law is quoted in the provincial building codes Act (National Fire Protection Association., Society of Fire Protection Engineers, 1988). 3. Explain the requirements for use of charcoal grills at an apartment building. Cite the code. FC307.5 contains the requirements of charcoal in apartment buildings. No one will be allowed to light any sort of fire that will be unsafe. Open fires have an extremely high chance of spreading and causing fire accidents. As a result, there are strict measures when handling them. This includes charcoal grills or any open fire. Should charcoal grills be used, they should be away from balconies and decks of apartments. They should be not less than fifteen feet way from combustible structures and homes. Combustion of charcoal produces carbon monoxide, which is dangerous to human beings. This is one of the reasons why the charcoal grills, should be used far away from homes. This code only allows use of electricity stoves in the house. They must be inspected and listed by the relevant authority. However, homes of one and two families are excluded from this code (Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers, 1997). .4. A house is used both for personal residence and to provide day care for seven children in the basement. What is the occupancy classification and what restrictions are made on the use? It is not wrong to have a day care combined with the personal residence. The building code section 308, 1-1 states that such a building should be large enough to hold up to sixteen people. It allows people to live together just in case there are others who depend on each other for help; for example, small children or disabled people. These people should be receiving help on a 24 hours basis. It is wrong to have a dare care facility at the basement of the house. Section 308, 1-4 states that there should be a separate building for looking after these children. This is an appropriate day care center. It is designed for less than 24 hour care or less. These children should be accommodated in the main house and not the basement. The basement is meant for utility space. For example, heaters, fuse boxes and parking lots. There is a separate section of building codes that talk about utility space and miscellaneous (Lataille, 2003). 5. You notice a property is vacant and has vegetation covering it- what actions are required to bring this structure in code compliance. Property management codes require all property to be free from rodents or any other infestation. Therefore, any vegetation around homes or other structures should be not more than six inches or 152.4 mm. If the property is vacant, the local authorities should look for the administrator. He or she should be informed about the status of the structure and the immediate measure to be taken. For example, he or she should organize how the compound should be cleaned. All the overgrown vegetation should be cut and disposed off. The environment should comply with the codes of property management. There is a penalty for violating codes of property management. Therefore, the administrator is likely to face the consequences of deserting his or her property (Lataille, 2003) 6. Under what conditions is the use of portable electrical connectors permitted. These kinds of equipment include laptops, CD players, DVD players, notepads, cell phones, iPads among others. People can only use them in areas where it is safe to use them. For instance, some of these devices interfere with signals of other equipment; for instance, cell phones are known to interfere with some hospital electronic equipment. During taking off or landing of airplanes, people are required to switch off any electronic equipment. However, it has not been confirmed that it is true phones interfere with aircraft operations. The Aviation department just takes a precaution measure to ensure maximum safety during the flight (Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers, 1997). 7. What fire extinguishers are required in Educational Occupancies and what spacing is indicated? In addition, the local school board proposes placing fire extinguishers only in the offices, janitor’s closets and special purpose classrooms (labs and shops), what are your thoughts? Portable fire extinguishers should be used in all educational facilities. Portable fire extinguishers are easy and effective to use because of their mobility. In case a fire starts and there are no extinguisher on site, a person can easily rush for the nearest and use it to put out the fire. Every room should have a fire extinguisher. This will enhance efficiency of fighting fire in case of a fire accident. I think that the extinguishers should be placed in every possible place likely to catch fire. Installing in specific places may not help because fire may start at a place where there is no extinguisher. They should be available in all fire prone areas (National Fire Protection Association., Society of Fire Protection Engineers, 1988). Reference: Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers. The Pastry War (French Mexican War, 1838 to 1839)

The Pastry War (French Mexican War, 1838 to 1839) The â€Å"Pastry War† was fought between France and Mexico from November 1838 to March 1839. The war was nominally fought because French citizens living in Mexico during a prolonged period of strife had their investments ruined and the Mexican government refused any sort of reparations, but it also had to do with long-standing Mexican debt. After a few months of blockades and naval bombardments of the port of Veracruz, the war ended when Mexico agreed to compensate France. Background of the War Mexico had serious growing pains after gaining its independence from Spain in 1821. A succession of governments replaced one another, and the presidency changed hands about 20 times in the first 20 years of independence. Late 1828 was particularly lawless, as forces loyal to rival presidential candidates Manuel Gà ³mez Pedraza and Vicente Guerrero Saldaà ±a fought in the streets after a hotly contested election. It was during this period that a pastry shop belonging to a French national identified only as Monsieur Remontel was allegedly ransacked by drunken army forces. Debts and Reparations In the 1830’s, several French citizens demanded reparations from the Mexican government for damages to their businesses and investments. One of them was Monsieur Remontel, who asked the Mexican government for the princely sum of 60,000 pesos. Mexico owed a great deal of money to European nations, including France, and the chaotic situation in the country seemed to indicate that these debts would never be paid. France, using the claims of its citizens as an excuse, sent a fleet to Mexico in early 1838 and blockaded the main port of Veracruz. The War By November, diplomatic relations between France and Mexico over lifting the blockade had deteriorated. France, which was demanding 600,000 pesos as reparations for the losses of its citizens, began shelling the fort of San Juan de Ulà ºa, which guarded the entrance to the port of Veracruz. Mexico declared war on France, and French troops attacked and captured the city. The Mexicans were outnumbered and outgunned, but still fought valiantly. The Return of Santa Anna The Pastry War marked the return of Antonio Là ³pez de Santa Anna. Santa Anna had been an important figure in the early period after independence, but had been disgraced after the loss of Texas, seen as an utter fiasco by most of Mexico. In 1838 he was conveniently at his ranch near Veracruz when the war broke out. Santa Anna rushed to Veracruz to lead its defense. Santa Anna and the defenders of Veracruz were soundly routed by superior French forces, but he emerged a hero, partly because he had lost one of his legs during the fighting. He had the leg buried with full military honors. Resolution to the Pastry War With their main port captured, Mexico had no choice but to relent. Through British diplomatic channels, Mexico agreed to pay the full amount of restoration demanded by France, 600,000 pesos. The French withdrew from Veracruz and their fleet returned to France in March of 1839. Aftermath of the War The Pastry War, considered a minor episode in the history of Mexico, nevertheless had several important consequences. Politically, it marked the return of Antonio Là ³pez de Santa Anna to national prominence. Considered a hero in spite of the fact that he and his men lost the city of Veracruz, Santa Anna was able to regain much of the prestige he had lost after the catastrophe in Texas. Economically, the war was disproportionally disastrous for Mexico, as not only did they have to pay the 600,000 pesos to France, but they had to rebuild Veracruz and lost several months worth of customs revenue from their most important port. The Mexican economy, which had already been a shambles before the war, was hit hard. The Pastry War weakened the Mexican economy and military less than ten years before the much more historically important Mexican-American War broke out. Finally, it established a pattern of French intervention in Mexico which would culminate in the 1864 introduction of Maximilia n of Austria as Emperor of Mexico with the support of French troops.

Informan Coursework Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words

Informan - Coursework Example This is of particular interests in high-risk cases such as armed criminals or narcotics cases. In such cases, the police can only obtain crucial and confidential information from informants who might be an accomplice. Nevertheless, informants are also criminals and, their contributions should be scrutinized thoroughly. If not well managed, informants can nullify an investigation, destroy the credibility of an investigation agency, and endanger the lives of police officers. In order to benefit from the services of confidential informants, agencies/police departments should have well-developed informant regulations and procedures. Before using informants, agencies must define the duties and responsibilities of all officers in the chain of command. Secondly, the agency should have concrete personal, descriptive information about an informant. Lastly, investigators must obtain approval from the necessary authority before they can use informants. Consequently, informants should work under the authority of the investigating officer. Informants should not be allowed to conduct arrests, carry weapons, conduct searches, or seize contrabands. Even with adequate regulations and policies, investigators need ethical protection while working with informants. Moreover, informants also need protection from the agency in order to conduct their roles

Post high school through adulthood Article Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words

Post high school through adulthood - Article Example Unemployment has a strong impact in individual development since it directly affects one’s means of living. Without a stable job, an individual’s capacity to grow is suppressed because of the limited capacity to endeavor on activities that might strengthen a person’s personal disposition and social interaction. For instance, a jobless student would either drop out from school if there really is no chance of getting work to support tuition fees. Some would also dismiss getting into hobbies or sports activities since these are added costs on leisure. Since unemployment is a worldwide issue for several years now due to the current economic crisis, the bearing of this issue if felt by almost everyone particularly of the working class. Personally, the decreasing unemployment rate affects me in a way that the opportunities for me in getting a stable job in the future after my studies is scarce and therefore a great challenge to deal with. Every year, thousands of new graduates are facing the same problem and worse, there is no guarantee that the number of work available for the whole population will expand and stabilize. Hence, the government must develop policies to strengthen the economy by providing enough jobs for its people and increase trade and investment programs. Gilger, Mark Jr. (August 4, 2012). Morrison Takeover Safeway Plc

Morrison Takeover Safeway Plc This part of the proposal provides the overview of the study relating to merges and acquisition in UK grocery retailers giants. One of the most maligned antitrust decisions in the history in UK involves acquisition of grocery retailer giant, the fourth largest supermarket Safeway takeover by Morrison in 2004. In 1990s, retail markets throughout the world began to be transformed by acquisition and merges. Many of the worlds largest retailers, particularly in the food and grocery sectors involves and this is to reduce the struggling competition between the leading competitor and positioned themselves to dominate or becomes holders of major market share (wrighley, 2000a, lowe, 2002). However such an event still remain a non-routine and challenging occurrence within the life time of the individual organisation and its members merges and acquisition is still one of the areas of finance which attracted interest from the general public as well as the finance analyst and the managers According to (Glen 2008) said that expanding the activities of the firms through acquisition involves significant uncertainties (Schweiger and Ivancevich, 1985) Rappaport (1998) stated that, the basic objectives of making acquisition is identical to any other investment associated with a companys overall strategy, i.e. to add value. In practise, the motivation for expansion through merges, and the diverse range of issue such as action rises by using discounted cash flow technique. First of I would like to define merges and acquisition:- MERGES- Is used to mean the combing of two business entities which result in common ownership. Merges could be either horizontal integration, vertical integration and conglomerate integration. Horizontal integration, where two companies in the same industry, whose operation are very closely related is combined, that of the case of Morrison and Safeway. One of the motives advanced for horizontal merges is that economic of scale can be achieved, but not all merges achieve such gains or enhancement of market power resulting from the reduction in competition Merges and acquisition can have a profound impact on an organisational member and their family (Hayes,1981) indeed, merges and acquisition can sufficiently transform the organisational structure ,system ,processes and culture of one or both of the firm that people often feel stressed, frustrated and even frightened {Schweiger and ivancevich 1985} Although, the recent retailing revolution in the early 1990s resulted in a number of very significant developments. The grow in size of retailers not only replaced the manufacturers dominance in the supply chain but also eliminated many wholesaler and started the trend towards backward integration of the retailer. in 1990s,there is continued concentration and consolidation in all areas of supermarket sector (Davies and Ward, 2000). The industry structure is characterised by a number of common attributes including greater store size increase in retailer concentration and adoption of a range of formats by retailers to reach as wider as their customer catchment areas. Back in January 2003 Morrison, the mostly north of England based supermarket chain, announced that it had been in discussion with Safeway over a proposed takeover. The takeover would give Morrison access to the market in the south which has been difficult to break into. Morrisons bid to buy 480 stores of Safeway that will put it major competitors for the other big supermarket chains, Tesco, Sainsbury and Asda. The current market share of Morrison as at January 2008 is at 11.4% and make it the smallest of the big four supermarket and behind Tesco (31.5), Asda (16.8) Sainsbury (15.9), but far head off the fifth place Co-operative Group (4.4%).The merges could put Morrison on a par with Sainsbury. After the takeover of Safeway, the Morrison family currently owns around 15.5% of the company. According to Hayes 1981, stated that indeed, merges and acquisition often feel stressed and frustration because of the fear of loosing their job, their family life and the culture that they must have to changes. In light of this economic approach to defining markets and approaches that turn entirely on how customers respond to prices changes. In the u k, following the Wal-marts market entry in 1999, popular perception has focused on Alhoids acquisition with Sainsbury. Indeed, Alhold has regularly been obliged to damp down market speculation on the issue .However, given such a merges, not only would it then faced competing head to head in the UK market with the other supermarkets. Although the competition commission found that little evidence of monopolistic behaviour, the findings indicated both the significance of buyer concentration and the need for voluntary regulation (Cooper, 2003 Dobson et al, 2003) The takeover has not yet gone through smoothly due to the involvement of other potential buyer, including the other main supermarket entering the race. As a result of this, the Competition Commission investigated the issue. The commission found that, of the major supermarkets, only Morrison should be allowed to proceed with a potential takeover of Safeway. However this does not rule out another potential buyer. Phillip Green, billionaire owner of Top Shop and British Home Stores (BHS) has also expressed an interest in Safeway. The commission has recommended that if Morrison is successful in their bid that they will have to sell off some of the stores to ensure that competition is not compromised. Here in UK regulation which is the issue both the land-use planning regulation which restricts the other supermarket Wal-Marts ability to develop ASDA stores at a sufficiently rapid pace to challenge for market leadership and the threats of regulatory action to safeguard competition . UK food retailers makes clear Competition Commission ,2000 Vol. 1 Morrison could safely add significant market share in the southern England, Northern Ireland ,Scotland and Wales without triggering regulatory action. As a result, although Safeway as an operational entity would be unattractive to Wal-Mart, and some of the assets of Safeway certainly would be (Poole et al.,2002) stated that for an attempt to address this issue, similar scenario can be considered in the case of Safeway and Morrison s which has stores with a price-positioning and format ideal for Wal-Mart. Unfortunately Morrisons regional market strength mirror those of ASDA and acquisition of Morrisons operations in west-midlands and Southern would inevitably trigger regulatory action. Morrison with the family-owned regional chain, is likely to want to see that independent maintained or, at least its essence continued, in any link up with larger retailer Morrison has slashed prices on over 800 Safeway products to bring them in line with its prices strategy. After the takeover of Safeway in march 2004, of the leading supermarket chain which owned 479 stores, mainly in Scotland and South of England. The acquisition ran into difficulties caused by the outgoing management of Safeway changing their accounting system just six weeks before the transaction was completed. This results of series of profit warning being issue by Morrison that leads to poor financial results and a need to revert to manual system. Morrison currently has 375 superstores in the UK, this including new store opening by the end of 2007. Until 2004, Morrison superstores were largely concentrated in the English midland and the north of England, but expanded southward, Most of its stores operates home wares with fewer electronic, clothing than the main supermarket rivals. Morrisons strategy is based on doing the basic efficiently, selling predominantly food at lower prices and doing so only from large stores. This is the different approach from the other three big chain, which have moved into service such as banking and insurances, place greater emphasis on non-food In March 2009, after completed takeover of the Somerfield, Morrison purchases 30 stores from the combined group with the commend of the competition commission. This marks the move away from the post-Safeway strategy of concentrating on superstores, to adopt the work in a smaller space of a new smaller store as its aims to have a store within 15 minutes every UK homes According to Thomas (2008) in some circumstances, acquiring management seriously underestimate the complexities involved in merges and post-acquisition integration (Robino and Demeuse 1985) The history of Wm Morrison First of all let me give the history back ground of Wm Morrison. Morrison was founded in 1899 by William Morrison, an egg and butter merchant. In 1958, the company opened its first counter service store in a small town of Bradford, UK. Morrison opened its first supermarket in Victoria, in 1961 and stated trading on London stock exchanges in 1967. The lack of opportunities for the leading UK grocery retailers to increase market share through large-scale organic store development and has made merges and acquisition strategies particular important (Poole et al., 2002) Wm Morrison carryout the expansion programmes and in 1978, the company acquired Whelan Stores and began operating in Lancashire in UK, and opened the distribution centre Wakefield and expanded its operation to include chilled stores and an ambient storages area for produce In 2004 march Morrison takeover Safeway supermarket at  £3bn, this enables them to become the fourth largest retailers and more than double its store presence. In 2007 January, the company gave access to two new in-store recycling services in over 345 store spread across England, Scotland and Wales The media have highlighted the fact that Morrison and Safeway are an ideal geographical fit in that there are no areas of overlap. It was clear from the findings of the Competition Commission that these two companies would not imposed local monopoly and the customers interest would served. The debated concerning each of these bids by different companies, have not simply been financial. The distinctly geographical issues have been very much to the force. First the commentators have talked about geographical fit, not a subject always prominent where, merges and acquisition are debated (Bikini et al 2002). The ASDA and Morrison bids look more promising in term of geographical fit although Sainsburys fit in northern England and Scotland is also good, but the objective was to creates more level-playing field and although of course this bid may not be acceptable to the shareholders of Safeway, especially taking account of the ASDA /Wal-Mart financial packages said to be on offer Safeway stores and therefore present fewer problem of high local market share, and their acquisition of Safeway would leap-frog them above Sainsbury and leave three major players well ahead of the chasing pack (Poole, Clerk and Clerk 2002) 4.1 Empirical reviews In the real world the takeover and merges have several motives behind (Glen Arnold 2008.Buono and Bowditch 2003), among which the following could be associated with the Wm Morrisons takeover 4.1.1 Synergy= which mean the combine entity will have a valve greater than the sum of its part. This increases in valve comes about because of boost to revenue and the cost base when two firms AB are to be combined or gain may result fro synergistic benefit to provide a valve above that of the present valve of the two independent cash flow :- PVAB= pva+ pvb+ gain PVA=discounted cash flow of company A PVB=discounted cash flow of company B PV AB=discounted cash flow of the merged firm Therefore synergy is often expressed in the form 2+2=5 4.1.2 Market share/power==One of the most important forces driving merges is the attempt to increase market power {Alderson 2002}This is the ability to exercise some control over the prices of the products, and this can be achieve through either monopoly, oligopoly or dominant producers position. However, Wm Morrison, this is one of the objectives to gain the market share in the South where it was very difficult to break into and the shareholders valve would be maximised .Its the fourth largest company by sales and the second by market capitalisation, The strong market presence enhances the brand images of the company and provides economic of scale 4.1.3 Economic of scaleAnother important contributor to synergy is the ability to exploit the economic of scale. The larger size often leads to lower cost per unit of out put. In the case of wm Morrison, this is not the main motive of takeover 4.1.5 Financial Performance for six years 1feburary 2009 turnover  £14528m compare to two year after the takeover January 2006  £12115m. The profit and loss before tax in 2009 February  £655m compare to January 2006 of ( £312.9) The profit after tax in 2009 January  £460m compare to January 2006 ( £250.3) In 2005 immediately after the takeover, Wm Morrison give the profit warning and the share price drop drastically and the turnover was down to  £12116m compare to February2004 and the profit before tax in 2005 was  £193m to ( 312.9) loss in 2006. These are due to the pos-acquisition syndromes and the managements reaction to the takeover of Safeway .The accounting system were changes few weeks before the completion of the acquisition 4.1.6 The market share As of August 2008, according to TNS World panel, Morrison is the smallest of the Big Four supermarkets with a market share of 11.1%. Whilst Tesco, Asda and Sainsburys saw increases in market share from July 2008 of 31.6%, 17.0% and 15.9% respectively. Morrisons saw a smallest sized decrease of 0.2% in the same period There has been a significant amount of empirical research into merges and acquisition and the impact 4.2 The strength and weakness of Wm Morrison 4.2.1 Strength Strong market presence In examining the strength and the weakness of wm Morrison in its operation as the fourth largest supermarket in the UK ,this is to discover that competition in grocery industry in the southern market is intensified ,but Morrison is able to gain the market shares of strong presence in those areas. It serves over nine millions shoppers every week. Strong market presence enhances the brand images of the company Strong geographical presence Poole et al 2002 stated that Wm Morrison has strong geographical presence across the UK, both in superstores and petrol filling station .The company spread across Scotland with 50 stores ,Northern UK55 stores , 20 stores in Wales ,62 and 42 stores in midlands East and midland West respectively . Therefore, because of it geographical presence enhances the companys sale penetration opportunities and gives it a competitive advantages Extensive ranges of food and services The companys fresh food counters offer valve added services including personal advice, cleaning and preparation of fresh meat and fish according to customer s requirement {Troy 2003}Morrisons extensive list of specialized food products and services helps the supermarket chain to differentiate itself with competitors and thereby provides it with an exclusive bran identity Vertical integrated operations A study has been performed by Balto (2001) to examine the uniqueness of the services provided by the supermarket chain. Morrison is the only major food retailers to own and operate fresh food manufacturing and processing facilities. The companys operations are vertically integrated in its food category, which allows it to manufacture, distributed and retail the vast majority of its fresh meat and dairy requirement 4.2.2 Weakness Lack of presence in the online channel Online shopping has steadily grown in popularity in the UK. The amount of money spent online by consumers in the UK increased to  £14.7billion in 2007 Over the next five years online sales are expected to more than triple to £44.5billion by 2012 (Datamonitor-Uk Retail issues 2008:Time to re-evaluate propositions, BFVT0041,May 2008) With internet shopping rising at a rapid pace, supermarkets are establishing their online sales channel to increase revenues. Asda, Tesco and Sainsbury in the UK have establishing the presence in the internet online shopping, in order to capitalize on this rapidly growing trend towards convenience. However Morrison is yet to capitalize on this trend which limited the companys potential growth opportunities 4.2.3Opportunities Increasing demand for organic products Looking in the real world of the grocery industry, wm Morrison have the opportunities to increase the demand for the organic produces, where the Big Four supermarket chain are real competition , The increasing consumer awareness of health and environmental issue along an increasing resistance towards genetically modified (gm) food products and GM farming. Has led to rapid increase in the demand for organic food (Andrew 2004) Growth in private label market The private label market in the UK is witnessing a strong growth in sales. The UK private label sector is one of the most developed in the world. The valve of the sector is at  £45billon and forecast suggests that this will increase to  £ 52billion by 2011. Morrison has increase its private brand product portfolio over the years (DTI, 2008) 5. Research Methodology The way in which research in conducted is not the easy process of transforming the information into reality, but it need cautious planning exercise which follow the procedures and stages Before commencing the study, appropriate selection of the vital research methodology is essential to ensure that the proposal is in the correct steps. Research methodology is divided into two methods of qualitative and quantitative methods. In some circumstances the two methods are combining together as well depending the nature of the study i.e. multiple method (Litter, et al 2003), Tashakkori and Teddlie (2003) Industrial economist argue that market structure is intrinsically linked to firm behaviour and financial performances (Scherer and Ross, 1999; Martin ,1994) ,which look at the financial performances of the company wm Morrison and the market share above In this research proposal, the quantitative method will be use heavily because of the information provided and as the data resources are secondary data which considered the extraction of data manually from the statistical reports available on the website . Secondary data are used for research projects that were originally collected for some other purposes. It includes both raw data and published summaries. Most organisations collect and store a variety of data to support their operation. Secondary data could be divided into three parts=1. Documentary secondary data, 2.Multiple source of secondary data and third the survey based secondary data. The reasons for the uses of Quantitative method is that, its objective, systemic and orderly way of gathering and interprets the information for the use of the study Quantitative approach is predominantly used as a synonym for any data collection technique such as questionnaire and analysis procedures like graphs or statistic, that generate a numerical data Tashakkori and Teddlie (2003) In contrast, Qualitative is used predominantly as a synonym for any data collection technique such as an interview and analysis procedure like categorising data that generates or use non- numerical data Qualitative therefore can be refer to the data other than words. The qualitative data is very expensive to carryout and costly to undertake. It involve primary data analysis which are gathered from the the interviews, questionnaire, field survey carryout during the research study. The technique of both quantitative and qualitative methods, as maintain earlier, refer to some authors as multiple method (Tashakkori and Teddlie (2003) Also mixed method is the general term for when both qualitative and quantitative data collection techniques and analysis procedures are used in research design. It was argue that multiple method are useful if they provide better opportunities for the users to answer the research question and where they allowed the user to better evaluate the extent to which your research finding can be trusted and make better references 5.1 Empirical question The centre issue is the effect of the big firm merges on competitive pricing, which we sum up in the following question: What are price effects for clients of Wm Morrison and Safeway following merges? Merges can improve consumer or customer welfare by creating efficiencies or decrease consumer welfare by creating conditions conducive to monopoly pricing (Sullivan, 2002:381-3284). Simunic (1980) argues that some segments of the market could be more competitive than others; this could have an impact on the effects of the merges. Also test whether the merges have enabled the brand name firms to pass on any cost saving associated with efficiencies to their clients in the form of reduction in competitive price. Therefore the research question is very important and cannot be overemphasised. It is one the key criteria of the research success will be whether you have a set clear conclusion drawn from the data you have collect the research question is one of key question that the research process will address. These are often the precursor of research objectives. 5, 2 Research Ethics When doing research proposal the ethic should be bear in mind. This is considering the integrity of work as well as to give utmost respect of people and the organisation. In any research undertaken the ethical behaviours should be put into consideration not to offended any one in any manner When using other peoples works and materials for any research, their permission should be obtained or information should be given to them. In some research where the individual permissions are require, ethics play a very important part ,However in this study the research ethics is not very much applicable because the information used are secondary data which is already available in the website and internet Your research design may need to consider the extent to which you should collect data from a research population that is unaware of the fact that they are the subject of research and so have not consented It may be quite a different matter if you are collecting data from individuals, rather than from an organisation. However, there may be a case if you are conducting your research while you are an employee in an organisation and you are collecting data on individual was not disclosed, then this would pose a similar ethical dilemma(Gibb,1995). Conclusion The competition in UK food retail sector has been intensified in the recent years, and the four big supermarkets are competing among themselves. In these aspects, this study has not concluded that there was little evidence of the retailers having adverse effects on the consumer; nor was there significant evidence of the price changes at the wholesale level not passing effectively to the consumer. Traditionally, as UK food retailers have become ever more concentrated and consolidated, increasing levels of power have enabled them to exercise substantial control over the supply chain. In this case study analysed the competition commissions report will do little to stop the trend of expansion, as a means of entry into different market. Recently, there is another merges and acquisition of Somerfield by Co-operative Group which was completed in March 2009. From the recent literature on retail competitiveness and observations made regarding current developments within the competitive environment, it is evident that buyer power will definitely concentrate in the hands of the major retail players .The fact that the retailer are expected to grow their market share by acquiring another companies for them to compete with the others Wm Morrison the fourth big supermarket has this opportunity to expand into the Southern England which was very difficult or not impossible without the takeover of Safeway. During the takeover process many speculators were predicting another foreign takeover and were subsequently surprised by Morrisons unexpected interest

Pursuing Perfection: Society, Media and Beauty

Beauty has been long defined as a set of attractive features a certain individual appreciates. It is a generally accepted notion that beauty remains to be declared by the one who sees. However, as time went by, people’s sight blurred and along the chaos, this individual’s notion of beauty became the one and only truth. Being sensitive to what is real beauty is as dull as it sounds inefficient. To simply redefine what is beauty is never simple. Influenced from certain icons, highlighted by flashing media, and affirmed by many socialites, beauty has become more than a description of the face. Women had to be always pretty and slim.Men had to be muscular and strong. It has become a high demand in the market where hobbies and little appreciation became obsessions. The American society would almost chant miracles by cosmetic surgeries. The media plays a major influence, the society tolerates the subtle imposition, and the person within grasps the whole idea with both arms. Me dia Affirmation Media affirms the silent speculation of how people define beauty. People think they will not fit in with other people and ad commercials will show them how they can be happier when they are as beautiful as their models. It will be a challenge, the ad would say, but worth doing so.Little did the audience know that they were simply trying to sell their products that truthfully caring for their lives. To be young and full of physical life is the only key to happiness. According to website Media Awareness Network, ads take advantage of the insecurities of the people. Those who are not beautiful should use their products. When they use the products, and achieve the kind of beauty they desire, then their lives would be worth living. These ads could be as simple as the right clothes to wear for the season or the latest trend in cosmetic surgery available in the market today.Regardless of what product it is, it will make their lives perfect, or so their ad says so. Media has presented different options: shampoos, soaps, perfume, lipstick, make-up, clothes, accessories, shoes, bags, and even underwear. Media would allow people to choose to make them feel the freely did so. But each item on the racks and shelves of malls and grocery stores lead to say one thing: if you want to be beautiful, use it until you are. Society and the Tasty Bait In this regard, media hands over a product as a bait, and society takes a bite on it.In any generation of people, what others think and feel about a certain person mattered a lot to that person. It dictates how they should fit in into society and how they can be truly happy when they are truly beautiful. When the ads say a person will have to be slim so that others would even find true friends, then it would seem then that the basis of relationships is shallow to begin with. For every culture, beauty is defined differently. However, in the latest trends of fashion and influences, and the rise of a global market, one con strued definition has crossed borders. It made the world want that kind of beauty. The kind that is rather superficial than appealing to certain existential individuals and society is most appealed by it. It is one thing to have all forms of media present a definition of beauty, it is another when the rest of society applies these bait to everything it was intended for. Website Associated Content noted that media distorts the meaning of beauty but the society takes as it is. One could even say that society even confirms the ads and everybody else should follow. People should always be beautiful and sexy no matter who or where they are.Weakling Within There will always be the option to not follow the trends and be themselves no matter how eccentric they are. But as the society dictates, the individual is more inclined to follow. This means that other affairs associated with that person is influenced by the constantly changing trends. YGoY Beauty Tips even noted that even in employment , employers also consider the physical attributes of a person before hiring them under their wing. Cause and Effect Essay Paper Topics

Cause and effect essays explore how and why things happen. You could compare two events that seem distinct and separate to show a connection, or you could show the flow of events that occurred within one major event. In other words, you could explore rising tension in the US that concluded with the Boston Tea Party, or you could start with the Boston Tea Party as a political eruption and compare this event to a major event that followed much later, like the American Civil War. Solid Essay Content As with all essay writing, the text must start with an introduction to the subject, followed by the main thrust of the narrative, and finally finishing with a conclusion. For example, The Second World War was the result of building tensions throughout Europe. These tensions had effectively been building since the end of World War I but were increased dramatically when the Nazi party came to power in 1933, led by Adolf Hitler. The thrust of the essay could include the changing fortunes of the main armies, Germany and Japan on one side, and Russia, England and later America on the other. Crafting a Conclusion   Finally, the essay could be summarized -- or concluded -- with a look at the world after the signing of the unconditional surrender by the German army on May 8th, 1945. In addition, the essay could consider the lasting peace throughout Europe since the end of WWII, the division of Germany (East and West) and the establishment of the United Nations in October 1945. The choice of subject for an essay under the category cause and effect is important as some subjects (such as the example here of WWII) can be extensive and would be more suitable to an essay that requires a large word count. Alternatively, a topic such as Effects of Telling Lies (from the following list) could be relatively short.
